Extremism - Arrest warrant against Syrian for IS membership

According to new findings by the Munich Public Prosecutor General's Office, a suspected smuggler already in custody is also believed to have been a supporter of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia. An arrest warrant has now been issued against the man for membership of a foreign terrorist organization, the authorities announced in Munich on Tuesday. According to the investigators, he is said to have distributed propaganda videos on the internet calling for participation in IS and so-called jihad, the so-called holy war against people who IS considers to be infidels.

According to the statement, the Syrian is said to have joined the militia in October 2016. Until 2018, he was active as an armed fighter in various positions in Syrian cities such as Abu Kamal and Rakka. He is said to have entered Germany in October 2022 at the latest and continued to be active for IS. "He is said to represent an extremist Islamist ideology that sees armed jihad as a legitimate means of enforcing ultra-conservative Islamist interests and rejects the values of the liberal democratic basic order," writes the Public Prosecutor General's Office.

According to the information, the arrest warrant was issued last Friday. On Monday, detectives from the Central Franconia police headquarters brought the man before the investigating judge at the Munich Higher Regional Court. The judge ordered that he be remanded in custody.
