Arrest: membership of terrorist organizations
A woman was arrested in Trier on Wednesday on suspicion of being a member of the terrorist organizations Jabhat al-Nusra and Islamic State (IS). The French woman is "strongly suspected" of having been a member of the organizations abroad as an adolescent, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office announced in Karlsruhe on Thursday. She is also accused of war crimes against property. She was brought before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice, who ordered her to be remanded in custody.
The accused is said to have initially joined the foreign terrorist organization Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria in 2013, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office announced. After marrying a fighter of the organization according to Islamic rites, the couple joined the terrorist group IS in November 2013.
The woman is said to have advertised on the internet to people in Germany to become a member of the Jabhat al-Nusra organization in Syria. She is also said to have helped her husband procure military equipment for IS. She reportedly returned to Germany at the beginning of 2014. However, she was still a member of IS until at least February 2015.
The woman's potential involvement in terrorism raises questions about the justice system's ability to combat extremism, particularly in the context of online radicalization. Despite allegations of her promoting membership in Jabhat al-Nusra and aiding her husband in procuring weapons for IS, it remains critical to uphold principles of fair justice in addressing crime and terrorism.
