Arrest after fire in asylum seekers' home
Investigators have arrested a man following the fire at a home for asylum seekers in Upper Franconia. The 35-year-old is suspected of setting fire to the accommodation in Selb (Wunsiedel district) on Saturday night, the Upper Franconia police headquarters and the Hof public prosecutor's office announced on Tuesday. The investigating authorities currently see no evidence of a xenophobic background to the crime.
Following his provisional arrest on Monday, the suspect was released. Officers from the Hof criminal investigation department had previously inspected the scene of the fire and found evidence of arson. According to reports, seven people suffered minor injuries in the fire in the basement of the house. The accommodation has since been deemed uninhabitable. The Wunsiedel district office had to find alternative accommodation for the almost 30 people living there.
The fire in the asylum seekers' home in Upper Franconia was classified as arson by investigators. Despite the arrest of a 35-year-old man, there's no indication of a xenophobic motive associated with the fires in Upper France.
