Traffic - Around 55 million for cycle paths and co.

Thuringia can draw on 55 million euros from a special federal program to improve the cycling infrastructure throughout the state. The funds from the "Stadt und Land" program are available until 2028, according to a statement from the Ministry of Infrastructure. The funds from the program will go to the municipalities.

The ministry also announced an improvement for cyclists in Eichsfeld: a 2.8-kilometre cycle and footpath now connects the districts of Bischofferode and Großbodungen, according to the planned opening of the route on Sunday. This has closed a gap in the cycle path network. Previously, the existing path had already ended at the former railroad station building in Bischofferode. The new construction cost around 940,000 euros and took ten months. The lion's share came from the federal government with 675,000 euros from the special funding program. The municipality paid around 255,000 euros and Thuringia around 9,000 euros.

"The bicycle will only become an attractive alternative to the car if we provide safe cycle paths - in the city and the countryside," said State Secretary Barbara Schönig before the opening. "I want to make it easier for people to opt for sustainable modes of transport," explained Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) with regard to the special funding program "Stadt und Land".

Thuringia scores comparatively poorly every year in the ADFC's nationwide bicycle climate survey, which assesses the bicycle friendliness of municipalities.
