European Football Championship - Around 45,000 fans per match day traveled to the stadium by public transport

Abpfiff in Hamburg: After the last EM-match in Hamburg against France versus Portugal, the city of Hamburg, the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (hvv), Deutsche Bahn, Hochbahn, and the municipal bus company vhh.mobility (Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein) have drawn a positive balance of the mobility concept.

In total, the Deutsche Bahn recorded approximately one million additional visitors at Hamburg train stations, it was stated on Saturday. Most fans traveled in an eco-friendly manner with the train to Hamburg and continued with the S-Bahn or U-Bahns to the Public-Viewing-Fanzones or with the S-Bahn and Shuttle-Busses to Volksparkstadion. "The U- and S-Bahn schedules were densified, in addition, 30 Shuttle-Buses and additional barrier-free vehicles were in use for mobility-impaired stadium visitors", the companies reported. Furthermore, the service and security personnel at the stops or on the platforms were significantly increased.

Approximately 45,000 additional passengers per day

The S-Bahn increased its offer by over 1,260 additional train journeys during the tournament. "The special services around the game times, with two special lines to Othmarschen and Stellingen, were successful. Waiting times could be kept low, as the S-Bahns ran every three to five minutes", it was further stated. On game days, approximately 45,000 additional passengers were on their way to the stadium and to the fan zone at Millerntorplatz. A total of around 81,200 football fans used the Shuttle-Buses on the Othmarschen – Stadium route during the first four game days.

"Hamburg has shown that all football enthusiasts were offered a seamless journey to Volksparkstadion or the fan zone at Millerntorplatz – quickly, stress-free, and sustainably", said Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens). "I would like to thank all the people at the transportation companies who have made the games in Hamburg possible in the past few weeks with a lot of commitment!" The potential of public transportation and major events to harmonize well with each other could also be utilized more strongly by other major events in Hamburg.

"The fan traffic at our Hamburg train stations ran – also thanks to the good cooperation of the passenger guides and security personnel on site – peacefully and seamlessly", said Markus Hock from the DB. A sports event of this magnitude is nevertheless a special challenge. Never before have there been so many bus and train at an international football tournament. "We would like to thank all passengers and national teams who visited our train stations. You contribute to the fact that this EM is the great, peaceful football party that we all wished for."
