Around 423,000 appeals against property tax assessments

Around 423,000 appeals have been lodged against the new property tax assessments in Saxony so far. This was reported by the "Sächsische Zeitung" and the "Freie Presse" on Monday. The spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, Roland Herold, said that there were various reasons why owners did not accept the notices. Some had discovered errors in their own statements, others did not agree with the new legal regulations.

"Around 246,000 appeals against notices on the property tax valuation and around 177,000 appeals against notices on the property tax assessment have been recorded so far," said Herold. The deadline was January 31. Four percent of the expected declarations were still missing.

Around two million properties and plots of land have to be revalued in Saxony. Based on the owners' declarations, the tax office issues two different notices: the property tax assessment notice and the property tax assessment notice. They form the basis for the assessment of property tax by the local authorities. The new property tax is due from January 1, 2025.

The high number of appeals against property tax assessments in Saxony has also raised concerns about potential impacts on local real estate market, as many property owners are contesting their property tax valuations and assessments. Moreover, the significant number of appeals against property tax notices, specifically 246,000 for valuation and 177,000 for assessment, could lead to delays in the implementation of the new property tax system, potentially affecting finances of both the local authorities and individual property owners.
