In 2023, around 6.3 percent more people started an apprenticeship in Hesse compared to the previous year. As reported by the State Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, a total of 34,600 individuals signed new contracts for dual vocational training in the past year. This figure is still lower than the last year before the Corona pandemic, which saw 37,000 new apprentices. Between 2020 and 2022, the numbers fluctuated between 32,500 and 32,600.

More than a third (35.5 percent) of the apprentices who started in 2023 were women, according to the state office. The average age of those with a new contract was around 20 years. Most had a secondary school leaving certificate (around 42 percent), followed by the general or technical college entrance qualification (around 27 percent) and the lower secondary school leaving certificate (around 26 percent). Only a few started their apprenticeship without a school leaving certificate.

The increase in apprenticeships in Hesse may contribute positively to the overall employment and social security in the region. To ensure long-term success and security, it's crucial for these trainees to complete their apprenticeships and secure stable employment afterwards.
