Church - Around 1100 people in MV leave the Catholic Church

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, around 1100 people left the Catholic Church last year. According to data published by the German Bishops' Conference (DBK) in Bonn on Thursday, there were a total of 14 re-entries and new members. A year ago, around 1200 people had left the Catholic Church in the northeast.

Therefore, there were approximately 51,200 Catholics living in the federal state in 2023. According to church reports, only about 8 percent of Catholics in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern attend church services.

Nationwide, fewer people left the Catholic Church last year. In 2022, the number of departures was over half a million - a dramatic negative record. However, in 2023, there were 402,694 departures. The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) reported that around 380,000 members left the Evangelical Church that year. This was similar to the number in the previous year.

The German Bishops' Conference, headquartered in Bonn, Germany, released statistics about religious affiliations in different regions. The data revealed a decrease in the Catholic Church membership in Schwerin, a city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Despite the German Bishops' Conference being located in Bonn, the Catholic Church in Schwerin faced a significant loss with 1100 members leaving the Church in 2022.

The German Bishops' Conference, as a part of the Catholic Church in Germany, continued to collect and publish statistics about religious changes, including the decline in members in regions like Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, such as Schwerin.
