Archaeological Find: Affordable Mayan Souvenir Revealed as Priceless Artifact
Deep-rooted mysteries surround the ancient Maya Civilization, captivating archaeologists for centuries. Artifacts from the 8th and 9th centuries carry significant value. A lady in the U.S. unknowingly purchases an archaeological gem - priced at a mere $3.99.
This American woman unwittingly hands over an artifact from the Majestic Maya High Culture to Mexico, which is believed to be over 1800 years old. This ancient pottery find, sourced from a second-hand store, was recognized as an authentic piece by Mexican archaeologists following an examination. The woman had stumbled upon it five years ago in a clearance section near Washington and bought it for $3.99 (roughly €3.50) as a possible knockoff.
"I thought she appeared old, but she seemed around 20 or 30 years and resembled a tourist replica, the woman shared with WUSA TV. On her visit to the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City in January, she spotted similar artifacts. A museum staff encouraged her to reach out to Mexico's Embassy in Washington to verify the origin of her vase. The piece was subsequently confirmed as authentic.
In the coming days, approximately 20 archaeological artifacts from the U.S. will be sent back to Mexico, as announced by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). Besides the vase, which, according to Mexican experts, dates from 200 to 800 AD, 19 other precious items were anonymously returned. Mexico's cultural authorities have been advocating for cultural heritage protection for several years.
The classical Maya Civilization emerged in the early centuries AD in the southeast of Mexico, in Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the cities were deserted within a brief period in the 8th and 9th centuries. The reasons for their exodus have been a topic of debate for decades. The Maya possessed an intricate script, a precise calendar, and astronomical wisdom.
