International commerce - April sees an rise in exports.
In April, Germany witnessed a boost in its exports. Preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office reveal a 1.6% increase in exports compared to the previous month, equaling goods worth 136.5 billion euros. This marked an increase of 1.9% over April 2021 when considering the value. However, the scenario shifted when it came to imports, with a 2% growth in value terms on a monthly basis. Conversely, there was a reduction of 0.6% in volume terms compared to the same period last year, allowing for 114.5 billion euros.
May saw a brighter outlook in the German export industry, with the Ifo Institute reporting optimism within it. Still, Klaus Wohlrabe, head of Ifo surveys, added that the industry lacked significant momentum on the whole. In the initial four months, exports totaling 539.2 billion euros noted a marginal decline of 0.3% in comparison to the previous year.
The "Wirtschaftsweise" forecast projects an upsurge in global trade and industrial production this year, which poses a potential benefit for German exporters. Despite this, export-oriented companies confront challenges such as intense competition, increasing labor costs, and worsening energy prices, as stated by the federal government's advisory board.
In the previous year, the German export industry faced the consequences of a sluggish global trade and the impact of geopolitical crises.
