Over 2 million individuals passed through or landed at Hamburg Airport throughout this year's summer vacation. This represents a 4% increase compared to the summer vacation period in the previous year, as revealed by the airport. The most bustling day, with over 55,000 travelers, occurred on July 22nd, which was the first Monday following the start of vacations in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Despite global computer system issues that impacted air traffic in Hamburg, leading to delayed or cancelled flights, the weekend prior witnessed lengthy queues at check-in counters.
Airport: "Operations proceeded smoothly"
Despite the IT issue, the airport concluded a favorable assessment: "We encountered almost continuous heavy foot traffic in the terminals, and operations proceeded smoothly." Under 15 minutes was the average time most passengers required for security checks. One out of every three bags was self-checked in by passengers at the latest self-service bag drop terminals introduced.
The number of take-offs and landings during the past six weeks slightly increased by 1.5% to over 14,200. Airport spokesperson Katja Bromm attributed the high occupancy of the aircraft, explaining, "The load factor rose from 84% last summer to 87%."
Travel period continuing until October
The conclusion of the school vacation does not signify the end of the travel period for the airport. "September and October have emerged as robust travel months at Hamburg Airport," explained Bromm. Additionally, there is a resurgence in business travel. Due to the high load factor, the terminals will open as early as 3:15 am until October's end. Security personnel will be available from 3:30 am.
Last year, Hamburg Airport, named after former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, recorded its first profit since the Corona pandemic. The Hamburg Airport GmbH earned a profit of 6.6 million euros. In 2019, the profit was 32.2 million euros. Throughout the entire year 2023, a total of 13.6 million air passengers were counted, representing an increase of 22% compared to the previous year.
