In Brandenburg, nearly 6,000 kids and young adults who escaped from Ukraine with their families are now attending school. Around 5,670 of them are enrolled in public schools, with the remaining attending private educational institutions, as per data from the Education Ministry in Potsdam, in response to a query from CDU state parliamentarian Gordon Hoffmann. This is approximately 2,700 more students than last year, as per previous state records.

Since March 1, 2022, when the Russian attack on Ukraine started, children and youths from Ukraine with Ukrainian citizenship and non-German birthplaces have been welcomed in Brandenburg.

As of mid-June, about 3,000 students were attending primary schools, 1,450 were in secondary schools, 450 were in all-inclusive schools, and around 460 were finishing up their Abitur at a grammar school, with 130 aiming for a special needs school certificate. Around 400 students were enrolled in vocational schools.

According to the Education Ministry, Ukrainian boys and girls in Brandenburg's schools are governed by the same rules and procedures as all newly arrived or non-native speakers. By mid-June, 58% of Ukrainian students were learning German as a second language in support classes. 13% were learning German in preparatory groups with extra help, while 29% were studying German as a second language without additional support.

By the end of June, Brandenburg's school administration had hired 313 primarily Ukrainian refugees as teaching staff or pedagogical personnel to support the schools.

The CDU state parliamentarian Gordon Hoffmann sought information about the number of Ukrainian refugees in Brandenburg's schools from the Education Ministry, as the CDU has an interest in education matters. The CDU has been supportive of the influx of Ukrainian refugees into Brandenburg schools, acknowledging the significant increase in students from Ukraine compared to the previous year.
