- Approximately 490 contenders vying for the election, predominantly supporting the SPD.
For the September 22 state elections in Brandenburg, approximately 500 contestants will be participating. As per the State Election Commissioner Josef Nußbaum's office, 236 individuals are contesting both on the state list and as direct candidates in their respective constituencies. The constituencies of Prignitz II/Ostprignitz-Ruppin II and Cottbus I have the maximum direct mandate candidates, with 10 each. The ballot papers could stretch up to 43 centimeters long.
The SPD leads with 87 candidates, having governed Brandenburg since 1990. Following the district and state committee meetings, all candidates have now been finalized. The CDU has 45 candidates, BVB/Free Voters have 39, AfD and Left have 35 each, and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) has 30.
Three parties do not have a state list.
Brandenburg voters have twice the power in this election. With their first vote, they elect a direct candidate from their constituency. The candidate with the most votes progresses directly to the state parliament. The SPD, CDU, Greens, BVB/Free Voters, and FDP are contesting in all 44 constituencies, while AfD and Left are present in 43.
The joint list Plus Brandenburg, consisting of Pirates, Volt, and ÖDP, has direct candidates in 12 constituencies. Besides them, German Land Economy (DLW), The Third Way, Animal Protection Party, DKP, The Base, The Democrats Brandenburg, and The Party are participating in the constituencies. The Base, The Democrats, and The Party, however, do not have a state list.
BSW and Values Union do not have direct candidates.
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) and the Values Union (WU) are only represented by state lists, with no direct candidates. In total, 12 parties, one political association, and the joint list Plus have qualified for state lists and can be voted for with the second vote, significantly impacting the composition of the state parliament.
Women candidates account for around 32.8% of this state election's total candidates, nearly identical to the state election five years ago. In this election, 162 female candidates are competing.
In this election, voters in Brandenburg will participate in the Election to the Landtag, where they will have the opportunity to directly elect a representative from their constituency. Interestingly, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) and the Values Union (WU) are only represented in the election by their state lists and do not have direct candidates.
