Radical ideologies - Approximately 2000 attendees gather for the funeral of a slain police officer.
Around 2000 attendees are expected at the funeral for the murdered police officer Rouven Laur, which will take place at Mannheim's Congress Center Rosengarten on Friday (11:00 am). Some of the expected high-profile attendees include Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), Baden-Württemberg Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), and Landesinnenminister Thomas Strobl (CDU). The Southwest Broadcasting Corporation (SWR) is set to broadcast the funeral live on television and through their social media channels.
Earlier reports by the police have revealed that the attendees at the funeral include relatives and police officers. There will be an external broadcast of the event taking place on Friedrichsplatz as well, where condolence books will be available.
Two weeks ago, at Mannheim's Market Square, a 25-year-old Afghan stabbed five participants from the Islam-critical movement Pax Europa, as well as a police officer. The 29-year-old officer later lost his fight for life due to his injuries.
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier condemned the act as a "terrifying terrorist attack" during a visit to Mannheim last week. It's believed that the perpetrator had a political, possibly Islamist, motive.
