Alert issues concerning forest blazes - Approaching precipitation and thunderstorms escalate wildfire danger in the forest
Due to the scorching temperature and water scarcity in Saxony, the likelihood of forest fires has been escalating for several days now. Initially, only two regions, namely Lommatzscher Pflege and the southern Leipzig district, were under warning level 3 a week ago. However, by Saturday morning, the entire northern portion of the state and most of the Vogtland district were under threat. The map indicated high risk zones in the districts of Görlitz, Bautzen, Meissen, Leipzig, and the state capital Dresden.
Last Wednesday, the heathland of Niesky even reached the max level 5, but the situation took a turn for the better - albeit temporarily. According to the forecast, moderate rainfall is expected to lower the risk in large parts of Saxony on Sunday. Moreover, most of the state will be at the lowest level 1 on Monday, indicating a very low risk.
Localized rainfall with thunder and lightning
A low pressure system centering Central Germany will bring rain and cooler winds heading eastward on Sunday, as per a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD). "The rainfall may be heavy locally, accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly in the hilly areas and Upper Lusatia." The temperature in Leipzig will drop to 24 degrees and reach 26 degrees in Neiße on Sunday. However, on Monday, the temperature will range between 21 to 24 degrees without any rainfall.
Despite the temporary improvement in the forest fire situation, individuals in high-risk areas such as Görlitz, Bautzen, Meissen, Leipzig, and Dresden should still utilize their free time wisely, considering potential weather changes. With anticipated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Sunday, it's advisable to stay indoors during these periods.
