Judgments - Appeal in trial for attempted murder in front of children

A cunning murder attempt against a woman in the presence of her children will be retried in court. The two defendants filed a appeal, as the Oldenburg Regional Court announced. The court considered it proven that the ex-husband instigated his best friend to the crime and sentenced both to 14 years in prison.

According to the court, the 37-year-old defendant decided to kill his ex-wife out of jealousy. He convinced his best friend to lie in wait for her at the transfer of the children in Delmenhorst in February 2023. The defendant waited in the office of the Youth Welfare Office during this time. When the then 35-year-old woman with the children got out of the car in front of the office, her best friend shot her with a handgun.

The bullet allegedly hit the victim's face. The woman suffered a potentially life-threatening head injury and had to undergo emergency surgery. It was only a lucky coincidence that she survived. The children, who were eight, ten, and twelve years old at the time, had to witness the crime but remained unharmed. After the attempted murder, the 43-year-old defendant is said to have fled on a bicycle. The defendants denied the attempted murder and the instigation to commit it. Both are now appealing the verdict.

  1. The attempted murder took place in Delmenhorst, which is located in the Lower Saxony region of Germany.
  2. The 37-year-old defendant, who instigated the crime, is originally from Oldenburg, a city also located in Lower Saxony.
  3. The murder trial and subsequent appeals are being handled by the Oldenburg Regional Court.
  4. The mother of the children, who was the victim of the attempted murder, hails from the same area as the defendant.
  5. The judgments and retrial processes in relation to this high-profile crime are taking place in courts within Lower Saxony.
