Apartment dwellers make an unexpected exit.
The youngsters, together with their guardians, plunged into utter turmoil, synchronizing their fall with them, as detailed by the fire department in Lower Saxony's Leer. A young infant, miraculously saved by his father despite his own severe wounds, emerged unscathed. Similarly, his three-year-old sister, who leapt alongside her mother, remained unharmed as well.
First responders were also tasked with saving other inhabitants ensnared by flames and smoke within the multi-dwelling building. As per the fire department, there were three individuals with severe injuries, two with moderate wounds, and four with minor ones. All available emergency services on the island off the Lower Saxon coast were mobilized. Three rescue helicopters transported the injured to mainland hospitals.
The police stated that the blaze began in an apartment on the ground floor and rapidly spread to the attic and roof. The origin of the fire remained a mystery initially, prompting investigations. The fire department termed the operation as "complicated," with firefighting efforts extending into the early morning hours. Part of the house became inhabitable.
As per the fire department, the father hopped off the balcony prior to the arrival of the first rescue team and managed to grab the infant hurled down by his spouse. Subsequently, the mother jumped with the three-year-old daughter. "The parents' decision to take such drastic measures underscores the genuine peril that the family had faced from the fire," the fire department noted. Both children miraculously escaped harm.
As the family recounted their harrowing experience, the children, particularly the three-year-old, were praised for their calmness and courage during the ordeal. Following the incident, the community rallied together to provide support, organizing fundraisers for the family's recovery and temporary housing.
