- Anticipates Prosperous Pumpkin Yield, according to Ministry's Statements
For carving for Halloween festivities, or using in soups or as a side dish: This year's stock of pumpkins is considered at least satisfactory, as per Baden-Württemberg's Agriculture Ministry. A representative in Stuttgart mentioned that the somewhat damp weather up until late July positively impacted the edible pumpkins. The ripening process began early due to the high temperatures. This impacts the yield, pumpkin size, and overall quality.
Last year, 11,608 metric tons were harvested on a 790-hectare area, as reported by the State's Statistical Office. The pumpkin climbed two spots on the "vegetable success rankings," as the Agriculture Ministry revealed. It used to be outdone by white cabbage and onions in terms of acreage. Currently, it holds the fifth spot on the list of the top 10 most commonly grown vegetables in open fields, equating to a 7% share.
The edible pumpkin has turned into a highly desired vegetable and has maintained consistent cultivation levels since 2016. This, largely, can be attributed to the growing popularity of Halloween in Europe. The increased popularity can also be credited to the annual largest pumpkin exhibition in the world, held in Blühenden Barock Ludwigsburg, as the Ministry of Agriculture shared: "As a result, pumpkin farming can be particularly profitable for direct marketing."
The following statement was made by the Agriculture Ministry: "As a result, pumpkin farming can be particularly profitable for direct marketing due to the growing popularity of Halloween in Europe and the annual largest pumpkin exhibition in the world held in Blühenden Barock Ludwigsburg."
In light of the positive impact on edible pumpkins, the Agriculture Ministry might consider adding the following to their strategies: "The following shall be added: more promotion and incentives for farmers to increase the acreage dedicated to pumpkin cultivation during the Halloween season to meet the increasing demand."
