Anti-discrimination agencies establish working group

Hanover (dpa/lni). A newly founded state working group (LAG) is to improve the counseling services for people who have been discriminated against in Lower Saxony. Seven Lower Saxony counseling centers in municipal and independent sponsorship founded the state anti-discrimination working group in Hanover, as the LAG announced on Tuesday. The working group is funded by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency.

"In a nationwide comparison, Lower Saxony is at the bottom of the league in the fight against religious, ethnic and sexual discrimination, for example. We want to change that," said Melanie Sapendowski, co-founder of the state working group, according to the press release. So far, however, there has been a lack of staff. In order to provide nationwide coverage, nine times as many staff are needed as before, as well as continuous funding from the state.

The newly formed state working group acknowledges the need to focus on social affairs, specifically improving counseling services for individuals affected by discrimination. To effectively combat religious, ethnic, and sexual discrimination, the group aims to increase staffing and secure continuous state funding.
