Before league-start - Another test match for FC Bayern: Bundesliga general test
FC Bayern Munich is set to play another friendly ahead of the Bundesliga season. Next Tuesday (11:30 AM) will see Grasshopper Club Zurich visit the FC Bayern Campus. "It's not a given that Grasshopper Club Zurich agreed to this at such short notice, as they're already in league play. We're thrilled to make this friendly happen and have even discussed a potential return match in Zurich," said Bayern's sporting director Christoph Freund.
In the five friendlies so far this preseason, there have been four Bayern wins, including two against Tottenham Hotspur, and a meager 1:1 draw against 1. FC Düren. This Friday (8:45 PM/ZDF and Sky) marks the first competitive match under new coach Vincent Kompany, away to second-division side SSV Ulm in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. The Munich side will kick off their Bundesliga campaign nine days later at VfL Wolfsburg. Their first home game is scheduled for September 1st against SC Freiburg.
Reunion with Munich native
"We're excited to face FC Bayern Munich in a friendly. It's a fantastic opportunity for our players to test themselves against one of the world's best teams," said Stephan Schwarz, sporting director of Grasshopper Club Zurich.
The match also marks a reunion with Munich native Benno Schmitz, who came through the youth ranks at Bayern. From 2001 to his move to Salzburg in 2014, the now 29-year-old played for the German record champions' youth team. The right-back made a total of 132 Bundesliga appearances in Germany, playing for 1. FC Köln and RB Leipzig.
Grasshopper Club Zurich's upcoming match against FC Bayern Munich will offer their players a chance to challenge themselves against one of the world's top teams. During the game, fans can look forward to seeing Benno Schmitz, the former Bayern youth player, in action.
