Schmidt-Rose, a horticultural engineer from Sauerland, has been serving as the county administrator for a district with around 82,000 residents since 2018 – largely surrounding the city of Weimar. She almost clinched the victory in the first round of the county administrator election on May 26 with 49.8% of the votes.

The upcoming elections for the EU Parliament are approaching, and citizens of Sauerland and other municipalities in Thuringia, such as Erfurt, will have their say. Despite securing a significant lead in the first round of the county administrator election with 49.8% of the votes on May 26, a run-off election was necessary due to no candidate exceeding the 50% threshold. The opposition party, AfD, also won seats in the recent municipal elections in Weimar and several other municipalities, influencing local politics in the region.
