Police - Another operation due to chemicals in Chemnitz apartment

Following the discovery of large quantities of chemicals in an apartment in Chemnitz, the police and fire department were called out again on Thursday. According to the police, substances were discovered in several hiding places. Specialists from the State Office of Criminal Investigation confirmed the suspicion that these were explosive chemical mixtures.

The house was evacuated. According to a statement issued in the evening, the residents of the two neighboring apartment buildings also had to leave their homes. A total of 32 people were temporarily accommodated with friends or relatives. The emergency measures were still ongoing in the evening. It is not yet possible to say when people will be able to return to their homes.

The substances were deliberately detonated at around 8.00 pm and 8.35 pm. According to the police, further explosions cannot be ruled out during the night.

There had already been an evacuation on Kaßberg around four weeks ago. The 70-year-old resident was found dead in the apartment in mid-November. It is unclear why he was hoarding the chemicals, a police spokesperson explained. "That will probably remain a secret that he took with him to his grave." He had not previously come to the attention of the police because of this.
