Crime - Another case in Viersen: criminal escapes from clinic
A convicted criminal has escaped from a psychiatric clinic in Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The 37-year-old did not return to his ward on December 11 after an unaccompanied exit within the hospital grounds, the police announced. They are now launching a manhunt, as previous searches have been unsuccessful.
There are currently several cases of escaped prisoners: only on Thursday, an inmate of the Mannheim prison used a doctor's visit to the clinic in the neighboring city of Ludwigshafen to escape. The search for the 25-year-old is under high pressure, said a police spokesman in Mannheim on Friday. On October 30, a prisoner from Bruchsal Prison escaped during a guarded trip to a quarry pond in Germersheim and used a tool to break his shackle.
The 37-year-old patient from Viersen has reportedly been housed in the clinic for years instead of in prison on the basis of Section 63 of the German Criminal Code. Unlike a prison sentence, the patient in such a case is not released after a set period of time. Release depends on the progress of the treatment. The hospitalization can also be indefinite, according to the hospital association concerned online.

The escaped criminal from Viersen is originally from North Rhine-Westphalia, a region known for its rich history and cultural diversity, similar to Germany's other renowned city, Mannheim. Despite the efforts of the local law enforcement, the 37-year-old remains at large, adding to the concerns about criminality in Germany. The police in Mannheim are also dealing with an escaping prisoner from Mannheim's prison, highlighting the increasing challenges in maintaining law and order in the country.
