Anita Maaß re-elected as FDP state leader

Saxony's FDP has re-elected Anita Maaß as state party leader. At a state party conference in Döbeln on Saturday, 62.2 percent of delegates voted for the mayor of Lommatzsch. Philipp Hartewig was confirmed as Secretary General (74 percent). The FDP has not been represented in the Saxon state parliament since 2014. In the last state election in 2019, the party received 4.5 percent of the vote.

As expected, Maaß focused on liberal values in her introductory speech. The 47-year-old said that the state must create sensible framework conditions for the economy. "After five years of a black-red-green coalition, the Free State of Saxony is run down and financially run down, with a bloated and inefficient administration." A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony on September 1, 2024.

Delegates also unanimously elected Stefan Richter as the Saxon FDP's lead candidate for the 2024 European elections. "We are facing major challenges in Europe," said the 44-year-old after the election, also referring to the wars in Ukraine and Israel. In terms of social policy, he addressed the urban-rural divide, which is widening all the time.

The FDP, with Anita Maaß as its state leader, aims to promote liberal values and improve economic conditions in Saxony. The party, which hasn't been represented in the Saxon state parliament since 2014, will be fielding Stefan Richter as its lead candidate in the 2024 European elections, recognizing the major challenges facing Europe, including conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, and the growing urban-rural divide.
