Berlin - Animal shelter no longer places animals shortly before Christmas
The Berlin animal shelter will not be placing any animals with new owners over the Christmas period. From December 20 to January 1, there will be a freeze on placements, the Tierschutzverein für Berlin (TVB) announced on Wednesday. "Animals are not shopped, but adopted. That is why they are absolutely not suitable as a surprise under the Christmas tree," said TVB chairwoman Eva Rönspieß in a statement.
According to the TVB, making the decision to buy an animal carelessly often has far-reaching consequences. Only after the holidays do many people realize what costs and work an animal causes. Accordingly, many of the "spontaneous purchases" end up back in the animal shelters in the days and weeks after Christmas.
"It's very important to know: Animals are excluded from exchange and there is no right to a place in an animal shelter if you want to get rid of the animal again," said Rönspieß. The decision to adopt a pet should only be made consciously and together with all those involved.

The animal shelter located in Berlin, specifically the TV Bissendorf-Holte branch, follows this placement freeze. This freeze applies on Christmas Day and throughout the following month, from December 20 to January 1. Unfortunately, some animals, unsuspectingly bought as a Christmas surprise, end up back at the animal shelters due to the unexpected demands and responsibilities. Consequently, Rönspieß emphasizes that animals are not exchangeable and there's no right to a placement in an animal shelter for animals that are later abandoned.
