Tennis - Angelique Kerber takes part in Hamburg Open 2024
Former world number one Angelique Kerber will compete at the European Open in Hamburg next year. As the organizers announced on Monday, the tennis event held in Hamburg's Stadtpark will be the Kiel native's first WTA tournament in northern Germany.
"For me as a North German, it feels a bit like coming home," the 35-year-old was quoted as saying. Kerber was born in Bremen and lived in Kiel for a long time.
After a baby break of just under a year and a half, Kerber is about to make her comeback. Kerber, who won the Australian Open and US Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2018, wants to return to the tennis tour around the turn of the year at the United Cup in Australia. His first major goal is the Australian Open in Melbourne, which begins on January 14, 2024.
The licenses for the Hamburg men's and women's tournaments will no longer be in one hand next year. For this reason, among others, as well as for scheduling and logistical reasons, the women 's tournament will not be held at the Rothenbaum, but in the Stadtpark from July 21 to 26. Alexander Zverev and Boris Becker-trained Holger Rune from Denmark, among others, will compete in the men's tournament at Rothenbaum from July 15 to 21.
