André Hechelmann: Another relegation "will not happen"

Schalke's sporting director André Hechelmann is not afraid of the traditional club falling into the 3rd division. "That won't happen. We are aware of the precarious current situation. But we also know that there is much more to the team. We are focusing on bringing this quality onto the pitch," said the 39-year-old in an interview with the German Press Agency.

When asked about the possible consequences of another relegation, Hechelmann said: "Please don't get me wrong: I'm not concerned with relegation. Of course, it's our duty to prepare for all scenarios and that's what departments within the club do. But we in sport have to look ahead to the short-term challenges and bring in positivity."

The former head scout added: "Our head coach sets an example for us every day, and the players have to embody the required winning mentality every minute - otherwise there's no place for them at Schalke. That also means that we believe in our abilities, then we will take steps out of the basement." After 13 games, the relegated first division team is in third-last place in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Despite the sporting misery, Hechelmann is convinced of the quality of the squad and the new summer signings. "Our new signings have shown at their previous clubs that they have quality and were important players there. We signed them on this basis," he said. "They haven't yet shown that quality regularly and consistently enough this season."

With regard to transfers in the upcoming winter transfer period, he is in close contact with coach Karel Geraerts. Although Schalke has debts, the club is capable of acting. "The economic situation is what it is, you won't hear any complaints from me," said Hechelmann, adding: "We have to be courageous and find the best options that fit Karel's idea." Following the retirement of sporting director Peter Knäbel announced for the summer, Hechelmann will be even more in the spotlight when it comes to squad planning.

In an attempt to avoid a third-division plunge, FC Schalke 04's sporting director André Hechelmann has stressed the importance of showcasing the team's full potential in Bundesliga 2. Despite being in third-last place after 13 games, Hechelmann remains confident in the team's quality and the impact of their new summer signings, who have yet to consistently demonstrate their abilities.
