Analysis: Higher throughput expected at the seaport of Brake

According to a forecast, the seaport of Brake on the Lower Weser will handle more goods in future. This is the result of a port development concept presented in Brake on Wednesday, which was commissioned by the state-owned port operator NPorts.

According to the concept, 6.85 million tons of goods were handled at the port on the seaward side last year. This is a significant increase on 2021, when more than five million tons were transhipped, and a new record. One reason for this is that the handling of animal feed has increased. The transhipment of cellulose and wood is also important for the port.

The authors of the study assume that 7.24 million tons of goods will be handled in the port on the seaward side in 2025. This applies in the event that there is no adjustment to the navigation channel of the Lower Weser North. The Lower Weser North runs from Bremerhaven to Brake. Local residents are arguing about the deepening. If the Lower Weser North is deepened, a throughput of 8.29 million tons is expected on the seaward side in 2025.

The authors recommend that the transhipment structures be expanded. For example, a third berth should be created at Niedersachsenkai, where wind power components are transhipped, among other things.

To facilitate the increased throughput, it's crucial to manage the shipping traffic effectively. Consequently, measures should be taken to minimize potential shipping delays due to congestion.
