Aftermath of the Storm - An injured pontoon was retrieved from Timmendorfer Strand.
A platform for work that sank during a storm in Timmendorfer Strand (Ostholstein region) was recovered on Saturday. The captain of the crane ship "Enak" managed to skillfully lift the pontoon faster than anticipated, according to Gesine Muus, the head of the local tourism department. Weighing in at 190 tons, the platform was expected to be towed to Neustadt.
The pontoon broke free from its moorings on May 21st due to inclement weather. It drifted toward the ongoing seawall construction and became trapped there. Previous attempts at salvage were thwarted by adverse weather conditions.
The planned opening of the new seawall on September 20th shouldn't be impacted by the mishap, Muus asserted. The construction remained unscathed during the incident. This structure, spanning over the Baltic Sea in a 400-meter-long arch, had an estimated cost of 11.8 million euros.
