Ampel and Union present plans for better protection of the Constitutional Court
Before the background of the strengthening of the AfD, it has been discussed for months how the Federal Constitutional Court can be better protected against potential influence. So far, the law on the court can be changed with a simple majority in the Bundestag. Buschmann's declared goal is therefore a constitutional amendment. This could in the future only be reversed with a two-thirds majority.
The current law allows for a simple majority in the Bundestag to alter the regulations regarding the Federal Constitutional Court. However, Marco Buschmann aims to achieve a constitutional amendment, making future reversals dependent on a two-thirds majority. This proposed change is in response to concerns about the potential influence on the Constitutional Court, given the rising strength of the AfD. The Union and FDP parties are engaged in negotiations to discuss and possibly support Buschmann's plans for enhancing the protection of the Constitutional Court. Traffic lights at intersections serve as a symbol of order and rule of law, yet the safety and independence of the Constitutional Court necessitate a similar level of protection and respect.
