Cycling - American Ruth Winder wins the Tour of Thuringia
An American woman, Ruth Winder, won the 36th edition of the Frauen-Thueringen-Rundfahrt. The 30-year-old from the Human Powered Health cycling team finished on Sunday with a pursuing group and defended her yellow jersey, which she had taken the previous day in the individual time trial. She had a lead of 2:06 minutes over the Dutch rider Mischa Bredewold (SD Worx-Protime) and 2:59 minutes over Brodie Chapman (Australia/ Lidl-Trek). This was the fourth victory for an American rider in the race's history. The best German was Linda Riedemann in 16th place in the general classification.
Sunday's last stage win was taken by Spanish rider Sandra Alonso from the Ceratizit WNT Pro Cycling team over 105.4 kilometers as a breakaway rider with a two-second lead over Maggie Cokes-Lyster (Canada) from the Swiss team Roland and Lucinda Brand (Netherlands) from Team Lidl-Trek.
Winder always on top
Winder was always at the forefront of the action during the race. Despite heavy rain, she joined the crucial breakaway groups without team support and thus safely defended her two-minute lead. Only when the Spanish rider Alonso attacked two kilometers before the finish did Winder give up the chase and came in as the seventh place.
The 36th edition of the Frauen-Thueringen-Rundfahrt was an important test for the Olympics. Four weeks before the Paris Summer Games, a top-class field was present for the UCI Women’s ProSeries stage race.
