Alsterwanderweg to become Karl Lagerfeld promenade
In Hamburg, an approximately 155-metre-long footpath and hiking trail along a canal in the city center could soon be called the Karl Lagerfeld Promenade. A corresponding motion by the SPD, CDU and FDP parliamentary groups was passed by the Hamburg-Mitte district assembly on Thursday evening, as the FDP parliamentary group announced in Hamburg on Friday.
The district's three-party coalition had chosen the path "Am Alsterfleet" from Neuer Wall 75 to Adolphsbrücke for the renaming because it was a central location that could be associated with his work, according to the motion. Fashion designer Lagerfeld was a regular customer of a bookshop on Neuer Wall, which he is said to have called his "intellectual delicatessen".
Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg in 1933 and always remained connected to the city. February 19, 2024 is the fifth anniversary of his death. The selected section of the Alsterwanderweg should ideally be given its new name on the anniversary of his death in 2024, said FDP politician Timo Fischer.
People in the Hamburg-Mitte district are considering renaming a popular footpath to honor local fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, whose preferred "intellectual delicatessen" was a nearby bookshop. The proposed Karl Lagerfeld Promenade, currently known as the Alsterwanderweg, lies in a central location frequented by municipalities and visitors alike.
