Awards - Also against loneliness: Neighborhood projects awarded

Going for walks with older people, having lunch together or accompanying them to the doctor: In Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, there are a number of projects that are working to promote more togetherness in the neighborhood and combat loneliness. Eleven initiatives have been awarded the "Healthy Neighborhoods" 2023 prize, announced the Neighborhood Network in Hamburg. Each award-winning project receives 1000 euros. The prize is organized with the health insurance company AOK Rheinland-Pfalz/Saarland.

The prize winners include a care farm in Marienrachdorf in the Westerwald as a shared farm for senior citizens with and without care needs. Or the "Bewegte Senioren-Mittagstisch" (Active Seniors' Lunch Table) from "Pro Mendig", which also organizes help with shopping and exercise activities. "Karthause Aktiv" in Koblenz offers, among other things, discussion groups for older neighbors. And "Paten mit Herz" in St. Wendel in Saarland gives older, single people time and help.

"Committed neighbors are needed so that people can live in their own four walls for as long as possible," said Martina Niemeyer, CEO of AOK Rheinland-Pfalz/Saarland. A lack of social contact is often the reason why people withdraw and become lonely.

According to the network, the awards will be presented by the end of the year. A total of 47 initiatives have been nominated. The "Healthy Neighborhoods" prize is also awarded nationwide in Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia. The Neighborhood Network was founded in 2004 as a nationwide action alliance.
