"Already brutal": Nuremberg goes down after XXL interruption

A soccer match lasts 90 minutes? No way! The first half in Nuremberg is only whistled off after 60 minutes due to an injury to the referee. The "Club" experiences a disaster.

2nd league - "Already brutal": Nuremberg goes down after XXL interruption

Thousands of disappointed Nuremberg fans had already had enough before the final whistle and left the stadium in frustration after the debacle against Fortuna Düsseldorf. After a curious injury interruption, 1. FC Nuremberg suffered another thrashing in a snowy spectacle. "It's really difficult to investigate the causes so soon after the game," said goalkeeper Christian Mathenia after the heavy 0:5 (0:3) on Saturday. "It's difficult to find words for it at the moment."

An XXL break due to a calf blister suffered by referee Richard Hempel completely threw the Franconians off their game at home and ended their run of four wins without conceding a goal in the 2nd Bundesliga against the Rhinelanders. One week after the 5:3 win against FC Schalke 04, coach Daniel Thioune's Fortuna put in another impressive performance and secured their place in the top flight.

"We couldn't cope with the pressure from our opponents. That's a bitter pill to swallow," admitted Nuremberg coach Cristian Fiel. "We rightly have to ask ourselves what that was, because it wasn't much."

After the unexpected interruption, Düsseldorf proved ice-cold. Dutchman Vincent Vermeij (39th minute, 45th +3, 56th / penalty), the ominous Ao Tanaka (41st) and Jona Niemiec (84th) shortly before the end gave Thioune's side their fourth away win of the season with a treble.

Nuremberg, on the other hand, suffered another crushing defeat in front of 33,062 spectators a week after their 4-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC. In the DFB Cup round of 16 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Tuesday (18:00), they can at least provide a much-needed mood booster.

"A lot, if not everything, was missing today to be able to win a game in the 2nd division. We didn't manage that from the very first minute, then it's clear that you're going to lose in the end, and justifiably so," said Mathenia. "It's a blow because you wanted to show a different game." The defeat was "brutal".

Fiel's team still defended solidly at the start. But after referee Hempel injured his left calf, the Franconians completely lost their grip. In the 26th minute, the referee sent both teams to the dressing rooms in frosty conditions, along with the support staff. In the 38th minute, the actual fourth official Assad Nouhoum from SC Oberweikertshofen whistled for the match to restart as a substitute.

Whether in the air or on the ground: Fortuna Düsseldorf acted mercilessly effective after the referee's break. In the 43rd minute, Isak Johannesson's shot even hit the crossbar to prevent a fourth goal before the break. Fiel reacted with three changes, but this did not give the lifeless "Club" game any impetus.
