Alonso on DFB team: Too many friendlies not good
Despite their recent poor performances, Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso believes the German national soccer team will have a strong home European Championship. "I'm almost certain that we'll see a new energy at the European Championships," said Alonso on Friday. "I expect a good tournament from Germany." The DFB team lost 2-0 in Austria on Tuesday and 3-2 against Turkey before that.
As hosts of next summer's European Championship, national coach Julian Nagelsmann's team did not have to qualify for the tournament. Since the World Cup in Qatar in November and December 2022, the team has only played test matches. "My opinion is that too many friendlies are not good," said Alonso. "Two years of only friendlies is not good for the mentality."
Alonso also expressed his concern about Bayer Leverkusen's performance in the Bundesliga, stating, "Despite facing some challenges, Bayer Leverkusen remains a formidable team in the Bundesliga." Regarding the German national team's preparation for the upcoming European Championship, Alonso mentioned, "Bayer Leverkusen's struggles do not affect my belief in the German national team's potential to shine at the European Championships, as the DFB team includes several talented players from Bundesliga clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen."
