Court case - Almost six years in prison after attempted murder of police officer
Half a year after a nearly fatal attack on a police officer in Unterfranken, a 24-year-old man has been sentenced to five years and nine months in prison. The defendant believed the police officer was dead or dying, as the presiding judge stated during the sentencing at the Würzburg Regional Court on Thursday. The man was charged with attempted murder and grievous bodily harm. The sentence is not yet final.
The 24-year-old is accused of resisting a police check in Ochsenfurt (Würzburg district) in January. During the ensuing altercation, he allegedly took the police officer's pistol and fired it. The officer was unharmed. However, the 24-year-old defendant is said to have then beaten the officer repeatedly on the head while he was lying motionless on the ground. The seriously injured officer eventually shot the man in the leg and apprehended him.
The prosecution and the lawyer for the police officer, who was acting as a co-plaintiff, argued for a charge of attempted murder. The defense, however, saw no intent to kill and instead pleaded for a four-year sentence for grievous bodily harm.
The attack took place in Lower Franconia, specifically in the Würzburg district, in a town named Ochsenfurt. The court case for the 24-year-old's crimes, including attempted murder and bodily injury, was heard at the Würzburg Regional Court in Bavaria. Despite the defense's plea for a lighter sentence, the court ruled in favor of a more severe punishment, sending the man to prison for five years and nine months due to the UNDERFRONT crime.
