Almost one in five adults is severely overweight
Around one in five adults in Saxony-Anhalt is severely overweight. This was revealed by data from the 2021 microcensus survey, as announced by the State Statistical Office in Halle on Thursday. According to the survey, 18.9 percent of the population aged 18 and over had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, which is considered obese. According to the data, the proportion of severely overweight people increases with age: while 15.5 percent of 30 to under 49-year-olds were obese, the figure for 50 to 64-year-olds was 20.7 percent. Of the older people, 22.6 percent were considered severely overweight. The BMI is calculated from the ratio of weight to height.
In addition to obesity, the State Statistical Office also examined the number of smokers in Saxony-Anhalt: 22.5 percent of people aged 15 and over smoked regularly or occasionally in 2021, it said. Among men, the proportion was 27.3 percent, while just under 18 percent of women took up a cigarette or similar. People in Saxony-Anhalt aged 31 to 64 were the most likely to smoke (31.5 percent).
The high obesity rate among adults in Saxony-Anhalt is a significant health concern, with statistics showing that 18.9% of adults have a body mass index of 30 or more. Furthermore, the prevalence of severe obesity tends to increase with age, affecting 22.6% of individuals over 64 years old.
