Almost half of the state roads in poor condition
Potholes or crumbling road surfaces - almost half of the state roads in Thuringia are in a poor condition. This is according to a report by the Ministry of Infrastructure, which was discussed by the state government on Tuesday. According to the report, around 1850 kilometers of the approximately 4000-kilometer state road network are in poor or very poor condition.
Only 76 percent of the maintenance, conversion and expansion projects planned in the state road requirement plan for the period 2016 to 2020 have been implemented in local thoroughfares and around 81 percent on open stretches. The main reasons for the deficits are the 80 percent increase in road and bridge construction prices since 2015 and the limited personnel resources of the Thuringian road construction administration, explained the ministry. Maintenance measures would continue to be a priority. In the 2024 state budget draft, the budget funds made available have been adjusted in line with the development of construction costs.
The increased construction prices and limited resources in the Thuringian road construction administration have hindered the completion of 19% and 9% of maintenance, conversion, and expansion projects on local thoroughfares and open stretches respectively. The ongoing traffic in poor condition roads, exacerbated by the construction work, is causing severe inconvenience for motorists.
