Most Germans desire increased job opportunities for older individuals in the labor market, finds a recent survey.
This research, conducted by Horst Opaschowski of Hamburg's Future Research Institute in partnership with Ipsos Institute, revealed that 80% of participants agreed with the statement, "In a world with a long life, we need more job opportunities for elderly workers." Women showed a slightly higher agreement rate of 82%, while men were at 78%. Support was slightly lower among high school graduates and low-wage earners, resting at 77% and 74% respectively.
According to Opaschowski (83), this desire stems from the sense of being useful and required even in the later years. People value their extended life expectancy immensely, not simply as an investment, but also for the sake of their personal quality of life.
Following the decision on a second pension package by the Federal Cabinet in May's end, Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) hinted at more reforms. He emphasized the significance of incentives encouraging older individuals to voluntarily extend their work. "We're discussing with businesses and labor about individuals who want and are capable of working longer having the option to do so," Heil said. Further proposals will be made during the summer.
