Almost as many passengers on lake cruises as before Corona

This year, around 1.5 million people have traveled as passengers on Bavarian lake cruises - almost as many as before the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, the number of passengers on Königssee, Tegernsee, Ammersee and Starnberger See fell by a good half to 800,000, said Michael Grießer, Managing Director of Bayerische Seenschifffahrt. In the following two years, the figures climbed to 950,000 and then to around 1.3 million.

Compared to 2019, the ships had also carried slightly fewer guests this year because some boats on Königssee had been converted, said Grießer. This means more space, but fewer seats and therefore fewer guests. "We will no longer be able to achieve the previous record figures due to the lower capacity," said Grießer, referring to the particularly popular Königssee. Around 700,000 people traveled on the boats there this year, compared to around 230,000 on Lake Ammersee.

According to Grießer, lake cruise passengers will have to be prepared for higher prices in 2024. However, these should be moderate at three to five percent, said the managing director. In future, adults on the Königssee will pay 22.50 euros instead of 22 euros. For comparison: in 2019, a trip to St. Bartholomä still cost a mere 15.50 euros.

Tourism in Upper Bavaria has seen a significant boost with lake cruises, as 1.5 million passengers have traveled this year, almost reaching the pre-pandemic numbers. Leisure time activities, such as lake cruises, are proving to be popular choices for tourists, contributing to the recovery of the shipping industry in the region.
