Universities - Almost a third of degree programs in Bavaria have restricted admission

Approximately one third of all degree programs in Bavaria are limited access, according to a survey by the Center for Higher Education Development. The current share is 32.1%, which is slightly below the national average of around 35%. The Center announced this on Tuesday.

Quota decreases slightly

Compared to the previous year (32.9%), the Bavarian quota decreased slightly. In most larger university towns in Bavaria, the shares of restricted degree programs have decreased, it was stated. This is mainly due to a decline in applied sciences universities. Universities also saw a slight decrease.

The highest share of restricted degree programs is found in the fields of Law, Economics, Social Sciences and Humanities (41.1%). The lowest share is in the fields of Language and Cultural Sciences (20.6%).

Lowest quota for cities with more than 16,000 students is in Erlangen with 5%, the highest at the Garching site of the Technical University of Munich with 77%.

In Garching, there are usually aptitude assessment procedures for Bachelor's and Master's programs, where the university determines the suitability of applicants based on certain criteria. The Abitur note - or Bachelor's note for Master's programs - is just one of several criteria. The number of places is then not limited, all applicants deemed suitable by the university are admitted, regardless of their number. In Garching, there is only one degree program with a numerus clausus restriction - here, only a certain number of students are admitted.

According to the Center for Higher Education Development, approximately 800,000 people begin studying in Germany each year. One of the most important topics for many is whether a place is available for the desired degree program without further ado, or if there are access restrictions.

In Bavaria, a significant number of universities offer restricted study programs, contributing to the 32.1% limited access quota. Munich, being a major university town in Bavaria, is home to several universities with restricted degree programs. Specifically, the Technical University of Munich's Garching site boasts the highest percentage of limited access programs at 77%.
