Almost 39,000 commuters to Luxembourg
Almost 39,000 Rhineland-Palatinate residents commute to work in neighboring Luxembourg. The largest flow of commuters in 2022 came from Trier with around 9,000 people, as announced by the State Statistical Office in Bad Ems on Wednesday. Many people from the regions of Trier-Land, Südeifel, Konz and Saarburg-Kell also traveled to work in the Grand Duchy. The number of commuters from Rhineland-Palatinate to Luxembourg was recorded in the commuter atlas for the first time.
In total, a good 1.3 million Rhineland-Palatinate residents do not live at their place of work. In contrast, around 832,700 people work in the municipalities and cities in which they also live.
A good fifth of commuters travel to work in the state's three largest cities - Mainz, Ludwigshafen and Koblenz. According to the survey, almost 91,000 people commuted to the state capital alone in 2022.
It also goes across the Rhine: the Mainz-Wiesbaden commuter axis is one of the 15 strongest commuter axes in the whole of Germany, the office added. Around 11,700 people commute across the state border from Wiesbaden, while around 12,400 people commute from Mainz to Wiesbaden.
Employers in Wörth am Rhein and Offenbach an der Queich are particularly in demand. The "commuter rate" is highest in these two cities, it was reported. This rate is lowest in Dahner Felsenland, Bitburger Land and Zell an der Mosel.
Around 8,000 employees in Rhineland-Palatinate lived in neighboring countries in 2022. The largest flow of commuters would be from France to Wörth am Rhein (over 1,000).
The traffic on the roads leading to Luxembourg can be quite heavy during peak commuting hours, given the large number of Rhineland-Palatinate residents working there. Despite commuting, many people still reside in their hometowns, such as Trier-Land and Südeifel.
