Almost 1000 prison inmates in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's prisons mainly house multiple offenders. According to the Statistical Office in Schwerin on Tuesday, 54.3 percent of prisoners already had a criminal record. 21.6 percent of prisoners had even been to court five to ten times.

According to the data, a total of 987 prisoners were serving time in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's four prisons at the end of March 2023, 159 of whom were on remand and 69 in juvenile detention. According to the statistics office, this was 23 fewer than a year earlier.

Men continue to make up the majority of prisoners at 95.5 percent. While 943 male offenders had to serve a prison sentence or were on remand, there were only 44 women.

According to the office, one in four of the 826 prisoners and those in preventive detention were imprisoned for an offense against persons. These include assault, manslaughter or murder. This is followed by theft and embezzlement.

According to the statistics, the age group between 30 and 40 was the most strongly represented among prisoners at 37 percent. Only eight people were aged 70 and over, while 21 people were under 18. Around three quarters of prisoners were serving a sentence of up to five years, 3.1 percent had been sentenced to life imprisonment and 17.8 percent for an indefinite period.

The Statistical Office also reported that the proportion of non-German inmates in the country's prisons rose from 15.3 to 17.9 percent within a year.

The use of statistics reveals that within the penal system of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a significant number of prisoners have prior criminal records, with 54.3% having at least one record. In the same context, it's worth noting that prison statistics show a decrease in the total number of inmates, with 987 serving time in March 2023, 23 fewer than the previous year.
