Basketball Bundesliga - Alba Berlin wins in Oldenburg thanks to a strong final spurt

Alba Berlin has secured another important victory in the German Basketball League after two recent defeats. The Berlin club won 90:85 (40:47) at EWE Baskets Oldenburg on Sunday after a strong final spell. The capital city club had trailed for almost the entire game. Berlin's best scorers were world champion Johannes Thiemann with 24 points and Matt Thomas with 20.

After an evenly poised opening spell, Alba was able to take a 10:7 lead. It was to be the visitors' last lead for a long time. After that, Oldenburg took control. Berlin had problems in defense and especially under the basket. In addition, the shooting percentage remained poor.

The home side had pulled 27:19 ahead at the start of the second quarter. Alba got back into the game several times, but Oldenburg always had an answer at the ready. When the visitors threatened to equalize, the understrength club from Lower Saxony hit important shots and held on to the lead.

The deficit then reached double digits for the first time midway through the third quarter (52:64). Alba still trailed by a clear margin (70:83) with six minutes remaining. But then suddenly nothing went right for the tired Oldenburg club. And the visitors were able to exploit that. Alba finally snatched victory with a 20:2 run in the final period.
