Alba Berlin wins confidently against Braunschweig
Alba Berlin remains hot on the heels of league leaders ratiopharm Ulm. The Berlin club won 92:64 (42:31) at home against Basketball Lions Braunschweig in front of 8983 spectators on Sunday. Alba thus remains second in the table. Berlin's best scorers were Sterling Brown with 15 points and Jonas Mattiseck and Yanni Wetzell with eleven apiece.
The visitors from Braunschweig got off to the better start. However, Alba then got into the game thanks to good defending. They won possession and scored a number of easy points on fast breaks. Even though they did not succeed in everything in offense, they were then able to extend their lead. The lead reached double digits for the first time at the start of the second quarter (26:16).
There was then a curious scene. After an alleged foul on him in his own zone, world champion Johannes Thiemann went into the other half for free throws. To his horror, the trio of referees suddenly and strangely ruled against him amid shrill whistles.
However, that only seemed to spur the home side on. After the break, Alba came out of the locker room with a lot of momentum. The home side had pulled 22 points ahead by the end of the third quarter (66:44). And the Berlin club did not let that slip away.
Despite bitter disappointment for Basketball Lions Braunschweig with the foul call on Johannes Thiemann, ALBA Berlin's basketball lions continued their dominant display, further widening the gap to 22 points by the end of the third quarter in the Bundesliga match. ALBA Berlin's victory over Bundesliga rivals Basketball Lions Braunschweig brings them closer to league leaders ratiopharm Ulm, keeping their hopes alive for a potential title challenge.
