Basketball - Alba Berlin misses surprise against Efes Istanbul
Three days after their home win against Zalgiris Kaunas, Alba Berlin 's basketball team narrowly missed out on another surprise in the Euroleague. On Thursday evening, the Bundesliga club lost 89:97 (40:37) at home to Turkish champions Anadolu Efes Istanbul in front of 7,116 spectators despite a good performance. Alba thus remains bottom of the top flight. Berlin's best scorers were world champion Johannes Thiemann with 31 points and Gabriele Procida with 16.
After an evenly poised opening spell, Alba fell behind in the first quarter. The home side, who was still missing the injured quartet of Sterling Brown, Matt Thomas, Louis Olinde and Ziga Samar, found it very difficult in offense - especially below the basket. Berlin trailed 21:29 at the start of the second period.
However, they then stepped up their game and Thiemann and Procida got into their stride. The duo alone scored 31 of their team's 40 points in the first half. They were also very consistent in defense. They took the lead again shortly before half-time (36:32).
Berlin was able to hold on to the lead for a long time after the break. However, Efes was back in front at the end of the third quarter thanks to its successful three-point shots. The lead now changed back and forth. However, the visitors were then able to pull 89:82 ahead with 139 seconds remaining. Alba was no longer able to counter that.
