Aviation - Airbus opens new assembly line for A321XLR aircraft

Airbus Aircraft Manufacturer has opened a new production line for the A321XLR aircraft in Hamburg. Around 300 employees of this line produce sections of the aircraft body, assemble them, and build the tank of the aircraft. Currently, the final assembly of the model is also taking place in Hamburg. According to Airbus, approximately 26 customers have ordered around 550 A321XLR aircraft so far. The first delivery to the Spanish airline Iberia is scheduled for the third quarter, that is, until the end of September.

The A321XLR is expected to be the first long-haul jet with a single aisle, as is common in short- and medium-haul jets. The aircraft has a large, fixed tank in its fuselage. The jet is expected to have a range of up to 8700 kilometers thanks to this tank and an optional additional tank. This would enable the aircraft to cover transatlantic routes. The new model made its first flight in June 2022. Pilot testing of the aircraft is currently underway. A certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is still pending. "We hope for a quick decision, but we will not put any pressure on EASA," said André Walter, head of civil aircraft production at Airbus in Germany.

Hamburg's Senator for Economics Melanie Leonhard (SPD) said that the aircraft's range of 8700 kilometers is exceptional. It enables new direct connections.
