- Agricultural workers expressing discontentment over their rapeseed yield harvest
This year, the rape crop yield in Saxony-Anhalt is falling short, with approximately 3.1 metric tons per hectare, which is below the typical average of 3.7 tons per hectare as stated by the farmers' association.
Back in the good times, farmers managed to harvest around 4 tons of rape per hectare. The lower yields this year could be linked to the unfavorable weather conditions observed recently.
The farming area dedicated to winter rape has seen a decrease of over 10% this year, dropping to 122,000 hectares. According to a representative from the farmers' association, the decline can be mostly attributed to the diminishing options for pest control. Consequently, several crops had to be re-plowed in the fall due to the severe damage inflicted by pests like soil fleas and other harmful organisms on the young plants, making total crop failure imminent.
Despite the decrease in farming area for winter rape, farmers used to harvest around 4 tons per hectare in better conditions. However, the lower yields this year in agriculture might be due to the decrease in pest control options, leading to damage by pests like soil fleas and other harmful organisms.
