Visit to Israel - Agreement with Holocaust memorial against anti-Semitism

Bavaria has signed an agreement with the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem as a sign of the fight against anti-Semitism and to improve the culture of remembrance. The aim is an intensive exchange and further education to ensure that the "incredible history, the extermination of the Jews, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust" is never repeated, said Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) on Thursday during a visit to the memorial as part of his trip to Israel. In future, teachers and police officers, for example, should come and see the exhibition in order to pass on their knowledge to young people in Bavaria.

The memorial is dedicated to the memory of the Jewish victims of National Socialism. "It is always a very moving moment to be here at Yad Vashem. This is my third time here. You experience history here" and it shows what terrible deeds absurd thoughts can lead to, said Söder.

Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan thanked Söder for his visit "in difficult times". This was a sign of solidarity and friendship. At the same time, he lamented the growing anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism worldwide. It is bad when politicians or parties receive more votes because of this, he said.

After the visit to Yad Vashem, Söder and his delegation continued their journey to a destroyed kibbutz in the restricted military zone in the immediate vicinity of the Gaza Strip. The trip is taking place under high security conditions due to the war in Gaza. In the late afternoon, Söder and Israeli President Izchak Herzog are also scheduled to meet in Tel Aviv.

The Gaza war was triggered by the worst massacre in Israel's history, carried out by terrorists from Hamas and other groups on October 7 in Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip. More than 1200 people were killed in the unprecedented attacks. Israel responded with massive air strikes and, since the end of October, a ground offensive in the area.
