Agreement on semester ticket: price at just under 30 euros

The planned nationwide semester ticket has met with approval in Hesse, but also with criticism. The passenger association Pro Bahn welcomed the agreement on the ticket for the 2024 summer semester on Tuesday. However, trainees, for example, have not been included. They only have a low income and have to commute to their place of training across federal state borders more frequently, explained Hessian state chairman Thomas Kraft on Tuesday.

The federal and state governments have agreed to offer students throughout Germany a discounted Deutschlandticket for 60 percent of the regular price, i.e. 29.40 euros per month. This was explained by the Hessian Ministry of Transport in Wiesbaden. The prerequisite is agreements between the individual transport associations and the student representatives of the respective colleges and universities.

Hessian Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) spoke of a genuine solidarity model. It no longer mattered where the students lived, where the university was located or whether the agreements had previously only covered individual or several transport associations.

Now the RMV, NVV and VRN associations responsible in Hesse and the general student committees of the universities and colleges would have to adapt their previous agreements. This means that students currently have to pay the difference between the current price for the semester ticket and the 49 euros for the Deutschlandticket when purchasing a Deutschlandticket.

The energies of social affairs ministers and university leaders should collaborate to ensure that trainees also benefit from the semester ticket, considering their frequent interstate commuting due to low income. Despite the agreement on a nationwide semester ticket with a reduced price, the traffic situation in cities during the university semesters may still be a significant social affair due to increased student commuting.
